Pic of the Week

Now is that a beach or what ;) Santa Monica Beach.... What else can I say!

At this moment when the picture was taken, the tide was out so there was a lot more beach to be seen..

This Summer I will see how much beach there really is when the tide is not out....

But defiantely put this on your list of places to see.... The Golden Coast

and now I see why they call it the Golden Coast, the beaches are amazing - and Santa Monica Beach is just one of them!

Smuggler's Cove - San Francisco

650 Gough Street
San Francisco, CA 94102, United States

You do not want to miss this place.

After Monte, our Tour Manager never showed up to the pre-departure meeting. Robb, Corey, Alex, Cameron, Brooke and I - set out on the town.

First stop was called, The Hot Spot. Which was not really the Hot Stop of the evening - and i later learned that the Hot Spot is only Hot only a few days out of the week, so best to know when the Hot Spot is going to be Hot and I would give it another shot.

Brooke got onto Corey's phone and searched for another place so we started walking while she did this and found the Smuggler's Cove so we were on the hunt for it. When you walk into the building, and after showing the bouncer your ID, take a right and go downstairs. There is a water fountain. Booth, Chairs and Tables. The Bar is at the back. We all ordered the same thing - Coke and Rum wasn it? I believe so. Very adventurous weren't we ordering all the same drink.

Why is that Canadians always have to bring out their coins and show them to the americans, and Americans are always fascinated by how our $2 is called a Toonie and our $1 coin is called a Loonie and also fascinated on how they look. Alex who is also from Canada that was apart of our pre-departure group and I got out our change and showed Cameron who is from Australia and Robb who is from Boston our coins - Australia is similar to us, Canada. But why is that Americans are always fascinated about how our Canadian money look - colorful? Which i can see why because Americans only have one color for their money, Green! So when they see color money, it is like shiny objects - their attracted to it. haha!

We stayed there for quite some time just chating away, we only had one drink each. But we just chatted and chatted away. Then we went back to the hotel and called it a night.

Next morning checked out of my room and had to put my luggage in, Hotel Whitcomb's luggage storage which stays safe, so you do not have to worry about your luggage during the day. Met in the ballroom with the remaining of the tour mates, and monte (tour manager) who now showed up, haha. Brooke was not coming down and Corey, Alex, Cameron, and I were all looking at eachother, wondering where she could be... So Corey and I went upstairs to knock on her door and good thing we did because she was still sleeping...

Hotel Whitcomb - San Francisco

1231 Market Street
San Francisco, CA 94103, United States
Great Location.

If walking behind the Hotel, Yes I agree with some of the comments on the Contiki Holiday Website, community forums it is a little bit of a shady neighbourhood. So Becareful. But if you stay on Market Street, in front of the hotel then it is fine. And as soon as you get two or three blocks away from the hotel it is fine, other than that - San Franciso is a very vibrant beautiful, breath taking city and i will be going back in a heartbeat.

Comment from Contiki Community Forum

"It is a few blocks away from Union Square. However, it was in a really shady area. I live in NYC, and even I didn’t feel particularly safe walking to and from the hotel. It was strange, because it was just around the hotel that it was shady – once you walked a few blocks toward Union Square it was perfectly fine. I would just be careful about going out after dark – make sure you are with a group of people." said juana1010.

Hotel Whitcomb

The beds are super comfy. Starbucks in the lobby - so that was a treat waking up every morning and going down to get your morning coffee (something that stays apart of your routine while on tour). Business center with access to the internet. You can catch the F line train right outside the Hotel Doors.

You can pay extra with Contiki for an extra night stay in the hotel so you are already to go in the morning and won't miss your tour. I was unable to as i was too late so i had to book the extra night stay on my own but it was alright, $80 bucks a night in a single room. Rooms are small but that is to be expected in a city like San Francisco, California.

Pre-departure meeting - Our tour manager did not show up as he was late arriving so who was there we decided to go out for a drink, first went to a placed called, The Hot Spot - which was not really Hot. So we moved on and found a place called Smuggler's Cove. Now that was more of a Hot Spot. There was six of us which we "labeled" ourselves the "pre-departure group". ha ha had to be there!

Some days I miss everyone and the Tour, being in San Francisco - Great memories to start the New Year, 2011! For sure will be doing Contiki New Years every year for as long as i can...

Happy Easter Contiki Style

Traditional we decorate Easter Eggs which without a doubt can be a messy job so instead of decorating Easter Eggs this year I decided to think outside the box and be creative..... so i turned Easter Egg into....

None other than EASTER EGG COOKIE.... Instead of just saying an original Happy Easter via Twitter to my Contiki pals, i decided to create a cookie shaped as a easter egg and do the contiki logo, took a picture and attached it along with happy easter message to everyone.. Its Greatness, Love it!

Happy Easter to everyone who has already celebrated it and to those who are today celebrating...

Welcome Katakolon

Perched on the west coast of the Peloponnesus, Greece's largest peninsula, this sleepy fishing village of some 300 souls is your gateway to Olympia, site of the original Olympic Games. Held every four years between 776 BC and 393 AD, when the Emperor Constantine banned pagan festivals, the Olympic Games celebrated the ideal harmony of mind and body. Every four years, the sacred flame of Altis is rekindled to light the torch for the Modern Games.

The games at Olympia were held every four years in honor of Zeus, father of the gods. Since Olympia is located on the isle of the Peloponnesus, athletes and spectators came in droves from southern Greece, and in lesser numbers from everywhere else. The traditonal date for the first olympiad was 776 BC, beginning a tradition that lasted for more than 1,100 years. Special messengers announced the festivities, which were held during July or August at the full moon.
Although the athletic contests were limited to only five days, the competitors had to spend a long preparatory phase at Olympia, training under the watchful eyes of the judges. Most of the events - running, jumping, boxing, wrestling, discus and javelin throwing - were thinly diguised skills useful in warfare, but no one was allowed to fight seriously until they had first returned home. Horse running and chariot racing took place on a special race course.
The winnter of each event was crowned with a wreath of olive leaves cut from a sacred tree with a golden sickle.

Because of the immense popularity of the olympic games, the Temple of Zeus, and the great statue which was housed in it, was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. But the religious aspect of the games declined during the Roman period and they were stopped altogether by the Emperor Theodosius after 393. The site was abandoned and the buildings fell into ruin. A huge earthquake in the 6th century completed the damage. Olympia was only rediscovered in the 18th century, and systematic research began in 1875.

The Heraion or Temple of Hera, wife of Zeus, is located in the central area as well. You will find the monument known as the Philippeion, dedicated to Philip of Macedon by his son, Alexander the great. The ruins of the great Stadium can be traced out of the old competition ground very clearly. forty thousand people at once could applaud their favorite athletes. It is hard to stand in this place and not hear the echoes of their cheers.

Contiki Tour Withdrawal

You had the trip paid off for months and having patience's until you hopped on the plane and flew around the globe to your destination to see amazing beauitful sites in Europe, partying and meeting new friends. Then It comes to the last day of the tour and the flight home. You are sad to say good bye to your new friends and the amazing places you have seen in Europe. There is major trip withdrawal that comes afterwards and it hurts. So how do you ease off it....

#1 Get back to your regular routine

#2 Look up and ahead, not down and behind

#3 Add all your new friends on facebook so you can keep in contact for future trips or just to stay in touch.

#4 Attending Contiki Parties does not hurt either - especially if you live in Calgary or Toronto, Vancouver for that matter. If something is happening be sure to be there. Never know who you will meet....

I had trip withdrawal after my San Francisco tour with Contiki - I missed all my new friends and missed the city foremost. But then the cure came..... Contiki was having a VIP EURO BASH in calgary a month after my tour, so what did i do... I jumped on it and got my name on the list. It was what i needed and met even more great individuals... <3

#5 Start planning your next Contiki Tour - and make it longer this time!

#6 Plan smaller adventures around your area - even if it is just a weekend away from your daily routine. You will come back into your daily routine refreshed and happier, and it will make the time fly by so much better until your next Contiki Tour.

Hope this helps....
and Happy Traveling :)

Welcome to Athens

To experience Athens is to discover the pages of history coming to life. To explore Athens is to walk in the footsteps of those who planted the seeds of Western Philosophy, science, culture and art. It is an experience one can never forget.

Although it is a bustling modern capital city, Athens still holds the ancient Acropolis and all of its history high enough for everyone to remember. The core of the city is built on a lofty hill with steep sides, providing an excellent defensive site. It is protected by a ring of lower hills, and by two rivers that flow into the sea nearby. Despite its many protections, Athens was far from isolated.

Through Greek eyes, the unique traits of Athens disclosed a special relationship with both Poseidon, god of the sea, and Athena, goddess of wisdom. Athena's characteristic owl was a frequent symbol on Athenian coins and her olive tree, signifying peace and harmony, commonly appears on decorative works.

During the Persian Wars (circa 400 B.C.) the city was captured and destroyed; but Athens anad her allies ultimately expelled their Persian foes from Europe.

Calgary Tower

Posted at 12:09am April 12 from HootSuite to Facebook: who wants a popsicle stick- cut out puppet of them, to come with me to places. It's creative - out of the box fun! Already picked for calgary trip tomorrow...stay tuned to find out who! it'll be fun :) .... It was Brooke!

Welcome to Calgary....

If you are ever in the City of Calgary this a a must see spot. It costs approximately 15.00$ per adult for the entrance fee but it is worth it.

  • June 28, 1968 - Official North American opening of the Husky Tower
  • June 29, 1968 - Official Alberta opening of the Husky Tower
  • June 30, 1968 - Official Public opening of Husky Tower
Originally the Calgary Tower was named the Husky Tower because of the companys that helped fund the project; a joint venture between Marathon Realty Company Limited and Husky Oil who were both establishing Head Offices in Calgary. And is still recognized as the Husky Tower today by the Calgary International Airport.

Although Calgary is not a earthquake zone, the tower is the first one built in western provinces to withstand a earthquake. The tower was built to withstand elements such as climate, high winds, shock, etc) Although, On a windy day the Tower can, and will, sway up to 16.5 centimetres or 7.5 inches and can withstand winds up to 161 km/hr.

Construction of the Tower commenced on February 19, 1967 and was completed in June 1968 (15 months) at a total cost of $3.5 million dollars. Pouring began May 15, 1967 and was completed 24 days later. The record pour in one 24-hour period was 39 feet.

The 1988 Olympic Winter Games were held in Calgary. To honour this special event, the Calgary Tower installed a natural gas-fired cauldron at the top to resemble an Olympic torch.

February 13, 1988 - The flame at the top of the Calgary Tower was lit for the Olympic Winter Games and continued to burn 24 hours a day throughout the 16 day event, consuming gas at a rate of 850 cubic metres per hour. The cauldron is still re-ignited for special occasions such as, Canada Day, New Years Day and other special city events. At night the flame is visible from as far away 25 kilometres.

March - June 2005 - The construction and completion of the new "Glass Floor". As a gift to Alberta on its Centennial the new glass floor was added to the Observation Deck. Spanning 36 feet wide and 4.5 feet out, visitors will be able to stand out in an enclosed space over 9th Avenue SW and Centre Street North.

It was really weird to be standing on the glass floors, when you approach them, your first reaction is... whoa!! And may take some time to get used to them and actually walk normal on them. Honest, it took me some time, I found myself standing on the metal beams, I am not to sure why but it must have been a natural instinct.

January 1993 - Installation of "State of the Art" telescopes on the observation deck level.
June 1993 - "Welcome to Calgary" interactive system. An exciting multi-media display that profiles Attractions and Events in Calgary. The information centre features an easy-to-use touch screen.

Clever way of doing advertising. Putting the name of the business/building on the roof so people from above can see where abouts you are so when they step down from the Calgary Tower they will have remembered your name and have a high tendency to come visit.

Downtown Calgary

This brown building you are looking at, surpassed the Calgary Tower in 1903 - There was a group tour and I 'eavesdropped' to have a listen and learn something new. Bonus - I did not even pay for a group tour listen and I got to hear for a few minutes. The tour guide may have left out some stuff but I was not going to interrupt.

This is a Oil company building and the glass will bring in the heat, to heat up the building in the summer. Talk about energy efficient. There was talk from the Tour guide about energy efficient in the winter but I do not recall what it was - But there was a way, I promise you that.

For more history on the Calgary Tower: http://www.calgarytower.com/History.html

Thank you for visiting Calgary.... Hope to see you again very soon!

Contiki Suitcase Party

What is a Suitcase Party

It’s simple!
Pack your suitcase.
Bring your suitcase.
Win AMAZING prizes!

There was a grand prize of trip to europe (airfare included) and other fabulous prizes.

Started calling items around 7:30-8pm with the first round of fabulous prizes.
And to get those fabulous prizes, Emily was calling out items that  you would pack and the first person to run up with that particular item won. It got tense and wild a few times with items. Like the condoms, Emily was getting run over with people running up trying to be the first person to win the prize.

Picture #1 - one of the many crazy items that people packed. Yes that was a baby. But the plunger won!!

Picture #2 - a showdown for the grand prize. they had to put all the clothes on in one suitcase and then run across  the room and take the clothes off and pack the other suitcase and close it. Candace won! Congrats!

Picture #3 - Yvonne and I.  Andrew is taking the picture. new calgary friends.
Picture #4 - swag bag. my desk will be soon covered in contiki brochures soon, he he!

Asia 2011/12 Contiki Brochure.

First point, i just had my phone interview with contiki holidays regarding my contiki application and it went rather well - i hope i anwsered all the quesitons very well to get a follow up (call back) and made a great impression, as my application, resume and coverletter all say i am beyond qualified. Over all i believe i will get the job... i will get the job...i will get the job... i will get the job... So send me good vibes! <3

Just recieved the new 2011/12 Contiki Asia brochure in the mail and it came along with a dvd, movie. popped it in and it was a movie of the Asian Adventure Tour.

Elephant ride really stood out of the greatest part of the adventure for me, getting the chance to actually ride an elephant, so cool! A private 2 day boat cruise along the Mekong River, locally guided bike tour of World heritage listed Luang Prabang, Entry and guided visit of the COPE support & rehab centre, all with private coach transport. Plus guest house stay in Pakbeng and Traditional meal at a restaurant that trains disadvantaged youth. You arrive in Bangkok and ends in Siem Reap. And only for $1699pp for 14 days.

The tour i would most likely do would be; Big Indonchina Adventure, it is a little more money and longer (25 days) but you get the Vietnam Experience tour, and Asian Adventure Tour combined. Starting in Bangkok, Thailand and Ending in Hanoi, Vietnam. Now all i must do is price out airfare so i can further my budgeting to make this fantastic trip possible. and on that note.... lets go!!

The dvd should really come with a caution: may have the urge to travel after viewing....

airline precautions

Going to the airport can be stressful for some people even if they have a fear of flying, or worrying if everything in their bags are allowed. Some common security rules for carry-on; each person is limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item on all flights. Before, get your ticket or boarding pass before you arrive - as we enter the internet world, allows us to check in online and print off our electronic ticket receipt or boarding pass. Avoid using the ticket counter.

Most common items people accidently take are liquid and gel containers are too large, and are kept in a plastic baggy. And anything that can start a fire, explode or be used as a weapon. So therefore, know what you are carrying, allow extra time for special circumstances (busy periods), keep your photo identification handy, humor is not an option, expect to have your bags searched, clean out your carry-on bags before flying, never leave your baggage unattended, do not over pack your pack - so it is light enough for you and someone else to lift it.

Best bet is to travel with carry-on luggage so you do not risk having checked luggage lost or stolen. Keep valuable items with you, customize the look of your bag to make it easy to identify.

Park 'n Fly is an efficient way to travel without having the stress of making sure you have a ride to and from the airport. And they always have cost-effective deals. http://www.parknfly.ca/content/en/home.aspx

Bike and Roll

Share your biking experience. My biking experience in San Francisco with Bike and Roll was fun! Another side to see the city of San Francisco, the hilly aspect of the city. Tour guide he was nice and started us off on a small hill which was great but then the next hills were BIG as to be expected in San Francisco, but half of us ended up walking half way after we lost momentum.
The second hill we rode up everyone were on their bikes and about half way up the hill, half of us were off our bikes and walking and that was only half the hill, it got more steep. It was nice when we were riding down hill.
Rode along the water and some yacht clubs which was a nice scenery but that is to be expected in San Francisco. Even saw some people swimming in the water and it was not a HOT day!
Trina and Cameron and I had to walk across the street from the Bike and Roll to buy some cheap gloves, it was breezy.
Even got to see Danielle Steele's home, which was a mini version of the whitehouse on top of a Hill on looking the San Francisco Bay.

The other side of the bridge was open so we got to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. On day one we walked across the other side of the bridge. So you can say I did it all, all what you were suppose to do when in San Francisco. Then we got into Marin County and it was all downhill all the way to the ferry. Everyone took the ferry except for Robb and Mandie they rode back.

Flying San Francisco

Flyin over San Francisco is breathtaking. When you fly over the Golden Gate Bridge and the city, it is beyond words i can not describe it - if you ever plan on flying to San Francisco (which you really should), make sure you book a window seat because you will not want to miss this view!

Traveling the world is like self discovery.

Now i had no idea where the airport was even at within San francisco, so when the plane started getting lower and lower to the water, the airport must have been there. Seriously all you can see when the Pilot flys around the City, over the Golden Gate Bridge to get in line to land at the airport.

Arriving into SFO over the water as you see the water get closer and closer to you, as the plane lowers and slows down their engine to try and make a outstanding landing performance onto the runway.

It is very easy to get around SFO airport. I had no troubles at all, I walked off the plane and started walking this way towards the outdoors. It requires no thinking to get around, that is how easy it is!

I will be seeing the view once again this summer but sadly SFO is just a stop onwards to LAX this time...
